## What a keyword is

- A keyword is the **buyer's language**: what the buyer writes and what the
  buyer searches.
- This is where the door to a sale opens. If the keyword is wrong, the sale
  will not come.
- We want products that a lot of people are searching
  for.[^zakria-afzal-etsy-keyword-research]

## What every keyword carries

Every keyword has these things:

- **Search volume**
- **Competition**
- **Target country**
- **Trend graph**[^zakria-afzal-etsy-keyword-research]

## Finding keywords on Etsy itself

- The easy way: search any one word in the Etsy search bar. The suggestions
that come up are more keywords. Then type **a** after it and more
keywords come, then **b** and more come, and so on.
- A keyword with **no search volume** is of no use. We want keywords that
  people actually search.
- Explore Etsy's **categories** to research which categories people are
  working in.
- Where there is search volume, also look for **low competition**. With
high competition you will have to run **ads**.[^zakria-afzal-etsy-keyword-research]

## The research flow

1. Give a **seed** keyword.
2. **Expand** it with autocomplete or related keywords.
3. Take the top listings' **titles**, **tags** and **description** and
reverse engineer them. This is called **"spy"**.
4. **Filter** the results down.[^zakria-afzal-etsy-keyword-research]

- **Reverse engineering** is the best way to succeed anywhere as quickly as
  possible.
- When reverse engineering, do not always look at the big numbers. Small
numbers can also make you good money.[^zakria-afzal-etsy-keyword-research]

## eRank, for keywords

- Go to the **dashboard** and search a keyword. It shows the searches,
competition and trend, along with more related suggestions, and the
average searches and clicks for all of them.
- **Compare listing**: copy a listing's URL from Etsy and paste it here to
see its demand. All its details come up, such as how much revenue and how
many sales it made in how much time.
- Put the name of the best shop you see into **shop info** and reverse
  engineer it.
- In keyword research, open **top sellers** and apply the **2026** filter
to get the top sellers. Reverse engineer their shops and your work
starts. This is the easiest way to do keyword
  research.[^zakria-afzal-etsy-keyword-research]

### Reading the eRank overview

- **Average searches** means how many people search it monthly. It is an
  average over **1 year**.
- If you search globally and the top searches come from **Pakistan**,
those are sellers, not buyers. So after the global search, also search in
specific countries to get the actual volume.
- Use **Trend Buzz** to see what sells most in which country. Analyse it,
but it is a **trend**, not evergreen.[^zakria-afzal-etsy-keyword-research]

## EHunt, for products

- Go to **Find hot products** in EHunt. It shows products that are getting
a lot of sales, so you can easily find a product to work on.
- Look for people who **started 30 days ago** and are earning well. Apply
the **days** and **niche** filters so that you get **digital products**.
- Do not go for **high sales**. Start with **lower** ones.
- Keep noting down everything that is in demand.
- Everyone can see the top products. Look at the products where nobody
else goes: do not stop at the first page, go on to the later pages as
  well.[^zakria-afzal-etsy-keyword-research]

## The rules to work by

- Use **eRank** for keyword research and **EHunt** for products.
- Be **inspired** by shops, do not **copy** them.
- Your **competitor** is your best friend, so analyse it well.
- Always stay on **one niche**, not multiple.
- Start with what you can **make yourself**. Later, have products made
  outside.[^zakria-afzal-etsy-keyword-research]
